EARLY IN NEW YEAR
Improvements To Streets
PROGRAMME ADOPTED BY
COUNCIL
Important works in connexion with streets in the Borough are to have attention early in the New Year. It has now been decided by the Borough Council that Ashley and Victoria Streets, which were tar-sealed some years ago, but which have now a very uneven surface, will be treated in the same manner as was High Street. As soon as possible next year tenders will be called for sealing these streets with plant mix.
At a meeting of the Council held last week Cr Martyn, reporting for the Works Committee, recommended that Ivory Street be tar-sealed. He said there was trouble always to be met in this street with a drain which ran alongside the metal, and it was thought that with tar-sealing proper action could be taken to improve matters in this respect.
The recommendation brought a mild protest from Crs C. S. Ayers and H. R. Taylor, who said they understood that lower King Street was to have priority.
The Mayor (Mr C. W. Tyler), who lives in Ivory Street, said that he was unaware of the Works Committee’s recommendation until Cr Martyn spoke. Ho could say that the drain was ''one of the filthiest in Rangiora.” It was practically level from Alfred Street to opposite the back of the Baptist Church, and was always a source of trouble. The sealing of Ivory Street was on the list four years ago, but was put off. He suggested that if possible both works be carried out. This was agreed to.
