Out and About in Kaiapoi

PERSONAL Mrs L. Dowdle is spending a holiday with Misses V. and H. Morgan, Flockton Street, St. Albans.

SUBSIDISED FULL TIME WORK * The Department of Labour intends this Christmas to arrange wherever possible full time employment for all fit married men irrespective of whether his employment exceeds the allocation of 16 weeks full time employment granted all fit married men each year under Scheme 13. Arrangements are in hand whereby the co-operation of local bodies is being sought for the purpose of providing extra work, when all men will be kept in continuous employment until January 29. This arrangement applies only fo non-seasonal workers. This will no doubt be beneficial to the men in Kaiapoi who in the past have had only a few shillings to spend at Christmas, whereas now they will have a few pounds, and there should be an all-round benefit.

FREEZING WORKS OPEN Oil Monday the works commenced operations for the 1937-38 season. The quality *of the lambs for killing is reported to be very good, also the weight. At present there is one chain in operation.

A COINCIDENCE

The long arm of concidence was in evidence on Tuesday morning, when Mr L .McAllister discovered a ring which lie had lost in the river in 1914 while getting a bucket of water from a launch.

Mr McAllister is overseeing the work of levelling the mud left on the river bank since the shingle has been taken away. He had taken three shovels-full of mud to indicate the level for spreading, when he noticed the ring, which he immediately recognised as his own.

The remarkable part of the coincidence lies in the fact that out of the 2000 yards of material taken from the river, the ring should be in the one of the three shovels-full handled by Mr McAllister himself.

Several old half-crowns and pennies have also been discovered in the spoil.

SALVATION ARMY

On Sunday next the children’s anniversary will be held, when the usual song services will be a feature. On Monday evening a concert programme will be presented, and this promises to be excellent. Admission is 6d.

LIFE SAVING CLUB

Activities for the Year

SOUND FINANCIAL POSITION

Tlio following is tlio annual report of the Kaiapoi Pines Beach Surf and Life Saving Club : “Immediately after the last annual meeting of the Club meetings were held weekly for training in the art of life saving. These meetings were well attended for several weeks, and under the capable instruction of Mr F. Priest good progress was made, and several members were well on the way to the Bronze Medallion standard. With the opening of the season, however, interest in the training classes waned, and the meetings were discontinued, the instructions being carried out on Sunday mornings at the beach. The season was affected by the unfavourable weather conditions which prevailed on many of the Sundays, with the result that on several occasions there were not sufficient members on the beach to form a team, if only for practice purposes. Trial runs were held, both on the sand and in the sea, and in both the benefit of indoor instruction received prior to the opening of the season was evident in the drill and in the actual sea work. The practice runs never failed to attract a crowd of spectators, whose presence was always an incentive to do the best of which the team was capable. The necessity for real rescue work fortunately did not arise throughout the season, although on two occasions it was necessary to assist children who found themselves in a long shallow hole which was often washed out a few yards from the beach. On Sundays and holidays flags were erected on the beach to indicate the area in which bathing was safest, the members on duty having first tested the area. Most of the bathers were appreciative of this measure, and kept within the area; however, some difficulty was experienced with bathers who would not confine their bathing to between the flags, and it was only after they had been warned that as the Club’s attention was concentrated on the indicated part of the beach and that should they get into difficulties they would bo in danger of not being noticed that they fell into line.

During tlie year the club held a dance and ran a Christmas hamper to raise funds for the proposed purchase of a new ryel to replace the antiquated one now' in use. Doth efforts were successful, and the reel will probably be purchased in the near future. The Club’s thanks are due to the Pines Beach Association, which has. given valuable assistance, donating a new line and also running a dance for the Club, which was a great success. Wo also wish to thank the Kaiapoi Borough Council for a grant towards our funds, and all others who have supported the Club during the past year. The balance-sheet shows' a very satisfactory credit balance of £37/3/6.
