Government Housing Scheme

SUGGESTION TO HEAT WATER

FOR SWIMMING BATHS

At last night’s meeting of the Borough Council the plans of the subdivision of property for the Government Housing Scheme were submitted for the Council’s approval. The subdivision provides for the building of ten houses.

Those present were the Mayor (the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery), Crs G. Wright, J. Hirst, F. Thorne, H. Rinaldi, I. W. Karaitiana, A. Gordon, and A. Linklater.

Apologies for absence were received from Crs C. Morgan Williams and A. E. Brown.

Permission was granted Mr E. E. Pollard to instal two additional petrol pumps for super grade petrol at his garage in Cookson Street.

A letter from the Waimakariri Sailing and Power Boat Club asking permission to build a slipway at Kairaki was referred to the Reserves Committee with power to act. An application from Mr L. G. Jepps for the transfer of a section at Ivairal?i was granted. Permission was granted the Ilev. T. M. Curnow to erect a linen sign on the bridge advertising the rose show. Mr A. J. Ellmers Avroto asking if the Council Avould hire the flamethrower with a vicAv to purchase. On the motion of Cr Linklater, seconded by Cr Wright, it Avas decided to hire out the appliance, and the arranging of a price Avas left to the Toavii Clerk (Mr It. J. Smith).

It Avas decided to donate the sum of £l/1/- to the Children’s Health Camp at Rangiora.

Band Week

A circular Avas received from the Kaiapoi Brass Band advising of the start of Band Week. Cr Hirst: I have started collecting for this purpose, and on Sunday night a leading citizen of the toAvn approached me and said ho didn’t knoAV it Avas a municipal band. I think if funds are available from any source a donation should be given to the Band.” Cr Rinaldi: If avc can afford to give let us give something, but the grant Avas made in the estimates. When the estimates Avere drawn up it Avas agreed that this Avas all Ave could afford. This Avas the ratepayers’ money, "and aiot a matter in Avhich the Council is personally responsible. A letter Avas received from the School Committee stating that they intended to asphalt the playground, and requesting a load or tAvo of sand from the beach. It Avas decided to obtain the sand. Supervisor’s Report

Arising out of the Supervisor’s Report, it Avas decided to try a Aveedkiller for the footpaths, and also to purchase a neAv laAvnmoAver. Cr Rinaldi: “In the specifications regarding the shifting of shingle from the river-bank it stated that the ground had to be cleaned up, but it Avas left in a bad state. Cr Gordon moA-ed, seconded by Cr Linklater, that the Works Committee inspect the cutting of grass on the footpaths and roadside before payment is made. Cr Rinaldi moved, seconded, by Cr Thorne, that a man be employed one day a Aveek in keeping the Public Cemetery in order.

Baths’ Improvement Cr Hirst spoke about improvements to the Swimming Baths by heating. When the baths were filled they were very cold, and detrimental to the health of children. Heaters could be used at night. He thought that in this way the takings could be improved 300 per cent. It was decided to get the Electrical Engineer’s opinion on the matter. A motion to this effect was moved by Cr Gordon and carried. Cr Hirst asked about the Coronation Library Fund. It was six months since the fund of £47 was collected, and nothing had been done. It was an insult to the subscribers. The Mayor said they were waiting to see if the Government would make a grant.

Receipts since the last meeting amounted to £229/8/10, while there was a debit bank balance of £543/1/7. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £139/19/-.
