Far East Relief Fund
(To the Editor of The Gazette) Sir,—The Chairman of the Far East Relief Committee issues the following statement on behalf of the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society: The work of organising this Appeal ends on the 30th of this month, although as the result of organisation it is hoped that a considerable sum will be received after the official closing date. This Appeal is the first made by the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society; a similar appeal is being made in other parts of the Empire. It is fully recognised that there are many worthy objects of our benevolence in our own country, but the appeal from the East is so overwhelmingly piteous that it appears irresistible. The Joint Council Hopes to send medical men, clothing, drugs, and dressings to the East. The amount that can be done depends on the practical sympathy of our people. There are few people in New Zealand who, if they feel deeply for the frightful sufering and helplessness of our fellow creatures in China, cannot give half-a-crown as a sign and symbol of their benevolence. Will you kindly send your donation now to the nearest branch of the St. John 'Ambulance Association, N.Z. Red Cross Society, or newspaper office.— Yours etc., C. MEACHEN. National Secretary. Nov. 23, 1937.
