PERSONAL Mr and Mrs W. Stalker returned on Wednesday from a holiday tour in Otago and Southland. Mrs A. R. Hawkins is holidaying in Auckland. The Rev. T. Coatsworth, who leaves for the Hawkes Bay district on April 13, will conduct his last services in Rangiora Methdoist Church next Sunday. Mr J. D. Galloway, winner of the Canterbury Amateur Golf Championships this year, and winner of the Dobson Cup, was congratulated on his success at a meeting of the Rangiora Golf Club Committee last night. Madame Colas will arrive on the “Rangitane” on April 9 to reside with her daughter, Mrs A. H. Yates, Ayers Street, Rangiora. McINTOSH SHIELD TENNIS The following will represent Rangiora in the Mclntosh Shield tennis match against Kaiapoi at thq Rangiora tennis courts to-morrow afternoon: — G. Carpenter, L. Watkins, J. Appleby, G. Mehrtens, A. C. Fraser, and C. Ayers, Mrs Mehrtens, Misses B. Kennedy, M. Watkins, P. Benjes, D. Tyler, and T. Edlin. NATIONAL PARTY LEADER TO VISIT RANGIORA It is expected that the Hon. Adam Hamilton (leader of the Opposition) will visit Rangiora in about three weeks’ time to meet supporters of the National Party. HIGH SCHOOL HALL FUND An extension to May 31 has been granted for the drawing of the licensed raffle in aid of the High School Community Hall Building Fund. LEGION OF FRONTIERSMEN Christchurch members of the Legion of Frontiersmen made an unsuccessful effort to form a branch in Rangiora at a meeting this week. Speakers outlined the features of the Legion’s organisation: to be on hand to assist in quelling disorders, etc., provide social activities for members, to wear a smart and distinctive uniform, etc. Some of those present criticised the movement on the grounds that protection of public interests Avas the affair of the State, that the Legion Avas too likely to become similar in its aims to Blackshirts, and so on. One man pointed out that if the Legion had a membership of only 36 in a city Avith a population of 100,000 it could not expect very much support from a toAvn Avith a population of 2000. BASKETBALL.CLUB The annual meeting of the Rangiora Basketball Club Avas held in the Royal Tea Rooms last evening. Mrs W. McCracken presided over a fair attendance. The folloAving officers Avere elected: — Patron, the Mayor; president, Mr J. Dreaver; vice-presidents, Messrs L. J. Thorneycroft, L. P. Devlin, C. J. Smith, and Mrs McCracken; secretarytreasurer, Miss J. Devlin; club captain, Miss D. Yette; vice-captain, Miss M. Beck; committee, Misses D. Yette, M. Beck, A. LoAve, J. Devlin, and Mrs Reuben. Five neAV members Avere elected. It Avas arranged for practices to commence on April 10. GOLF CLUB A stroke handicap, for April medals, Avill be played to-morroAV on the Rangiora links. The draAV Avill be made at the pa% r ilion, and the first four Avill leave at 12.45 p.m. A meeting of the Club committee Avas held last night. Mr W. Smith presided. Resignations from four members aylio have left the district Avere accepted with regret, and 15 neAV members Avere elected. It AA r as reported that arrangements for the annual tournament on May 1 and 2 Avere Avell in hand. Mr Horton, advisory officer to the Greens Research Committee, visited the links recently, and the committee heard a report that he had praised the greens and construction of the bunkers so far completed. SALVATION ARMY Harvest thanksgiving services are to be held at the Salvation Army Hall on Sunday next, and Avill be conducted by Brigadier Buttimore and others from Christchurch. On Monday night the Methodist Clioii will render a programme. The sale of produce Avill take place.
