Vipond Plays Captain’s Innings
AUCKLAND, Wed. (Sp.)—Tho annual provincial tournament opened in Auckland yesterday. Northland did not fare too well In its first game against Auckland Colts. The medium-paced bowler, J. Skeen, was something of a handful and in 26 overs (10 maidens) took 7 for 39. Northland was all out for 147 and, at stumps, Auckland Colts had replied with 135 for 3 wickets. Top-scorer for Northland was Noel Vipond (Rodney), the captain of the side. He scored 61. McG. Miller (Whangarei) was next best with 26. Dwyer made 45 for Auckland Colts. CITY AND SUBURBAN LEAD In the other match, Auckland City and Suburban gained a first-innings lead over Hutt Valley Colts. Hutt Valley totalled 154 (Polnton 48, Hazelden 31; Kerr 4-26) and Suburban made 174 (Hetherington 41, Simpson 30; Hazelden 4-36, Collins 3-28). Both matches will be concluded today.
