Clarke Retires
. AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.) Barney Clarke, former New Zealand amateur and. professional light-heavyweight boxing champion, today announced his retirement from boxing. “I have had a good innings and have decided that this is the time to get out," he said. " Clarke, now aged 22, started boxing in 1946, He turned professional late last year and after winning his first cash fight here, .had a draw and a win in Sydney. This year he won the New Zealand national professional title from Tommy Downes, and later lost it to Roy Stevens.
