May Resign Tomorrow
WELLINGTON, Thu (P.A.)—Within the next day or two—probably tomorrow—the Prime Minister (Mr . Eraser) will call on the Governor-General and inform him that, as the Labour Party no longer possesses a majority in the House of Representatives, he intends to offer the resignations of himself and his Ministry at an early date. Mr Fraser said today that, following this call on the Go\ernor-General, a full meeting of Cabinet would be held, after which he would again wait on the Governor-General and formally hand him the resignations of members of the Executive Council and also the various Cabinet portfolios they hold. The way will then be clear for the Governor-General to send for the Leader of the Opposition and invite him to form a Government.
Mr Fraser was in cheerful mood when he met reporters today. He said he and his colleagues wished to hand over to their successors as quickly as possible. In the meantime he would dispose of any outstanding routine work. “I knew we were out when I heard the early results in my own electorate,” said Mr Fraser. “It was evident that many people were not voting, and then I knew we were gone.” Mr Fraser emphasised that, as the Opposition party, Labour would not oppose any measure it thought good.
