Totalisator Handled £sl / 850 / 10 / - Yesterday

BY handling £51,850/10/- on the first day yesterday, the Whangarei Racing Club went a long way towards establishing a new record for totalisator turnover at the meeting. This figure was an increase of £9948 on the £41,902/10/- put through on the corresponding day of the 1948 spring meeting.

FIRST TOP-WEIGHT Patuone, which won the last event, the Parahaki Hack Handicap, was the first top-weight to succeed. He took up a good position behind John Silver, Sheba and passing the stands tire first time, moved up to the leader. Whynot, crossing the top, and was soon in charge once the straight was reached. Whynot challenged and got to within a neck of the winner, who was not unduly troubled. Having his second run of the day. Encomiast again filled a place.

PROBATOR SCORES Mr R, G. Hosking’s three-year-old colt Probator, which has been shaping well on the Kensington track lately, scored a good win in the first division of the Spring Plate. Probator and Lady Juliet were the first to break the line and led by two lengths to the straight entrance from Final Cast and Bona Dea.

Probator hit the front immediately after being straightened up for home and hung on well to stall off a challenge by Bona Dea oy half a length. The win favourite L’Aiglon was two lengths back in third place. Final Cast was fourth and he was followed by Little Acre, Swift Bow and Dicomet.

Tosti was very fractious at the barrier and when the field was despatched failed to jump away. Swift Bow conceded several lengths.

COMFORTABLE WIN Astrologist and Good Pal made most of the running in the second division, with Astrologist the pacemaker across the top from Royal Nib, Silverdine and Lyn’s Pride. Thev swung for home in this order and Silverdine quickly hit the front and went on to win comfortably by two lengths. ' Merry Marriage was a similar distance behind Royal Nib. Lyn’s Pride was fourth. Four horses figured in a photo-finish for third place. They were Merry Marriage, Lyn’s Pride, Stylish I ox and Astrologist. „ BEAUTE’S EXCITING WIN After running second in the Whangarei Cup, Beaute led all the way in the Manaia mile handicap to score an exciting win by a nose in a photofinish.
