Wavell Does Not Fear Soviet Aims

LONDON, Wed. (11.30 a.m.)—FieldMarshal Earl Wavell, a former Viceroy of India, said today that he did not think that Russia had aggressive designs on Western Europe. “Russia has not the desire for living space and the arrogance of the Germans,” he told a meeting of the Royal United Services Institution. “Russia is actuated by fear of another German invasion and will not trust the West not to rearm Germany again.” Earl Wavell said. Major-General Richard Hilton, former British military attache in Moscow, speaking at die same meeting, said many Russian soldiers regarded the coming of the next war as inevitable. The Russians had welded their armed forces into one unit more effectively than even the Germans.

The Red Army had robust, practical and up-to-date weapons, but its one weakness was probably a shortage of transport.

Notice of a bill to approve the agreement between the Australian and New Zealand Governments covering each country’s phosphate rights on Christmas Island was given by the Minister of External Territories (Mr Ward), in the House of Representatives at Canberra yesterday.
