Waterfront Rule Strictly Observed
WELLINGTON, Fri. (P.A.) Cargo handling at the coastal vessel Port Waikato at Wellington was stopped last night, the Waterside Workers’ Union alleging that there had been a breach of the conditions governing the engagement of labour.
The workers took a stand on the strict observance of one of the rules governing waterfront labour which has not always been strictly observed ir the past. The hours prescribed by the Waterfront Industry Commission for the engagement of labour are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., but it has been customary for non-union labour to be engaged after those hours if all union labour has been absorbed.
Some non-uniomsts working at the Port Waikato had been engaged after 10 a.m. yesterday and work was stopped at the request of union officials because of this.
