KAWAKAWA, Fri. (Sp.)— "One point arising out of amalgamation is 'that the main board will take its place as one of the bigger boards of New Zealand, instead of being a group of small boards.”

• This view was expressed by the chairman of the Bay of Islands Hospital Board (Mr P. M. Williams), in a discussion held on amalgamation at last night’s regular October meeting. Discussion was held in committee, the chairman later releasing the resolutions for publication. These dealt maihly with the cyclostyled outline of the Health Department’s proposals regarding formation of a Northland board.

The Bay board formally approved these suggestions, with one or two exceptions. Two of them dealt with the appointment and dismissal of staff, APPOINTMENTS AND DISMISSALS The department suggested that the local committees should have the right to appoint or dismiss domestics, laundry staff, porters, gardeners and firemen, but not medical, nursing, laboratory, X-ray and physiotherapy staff or other staff directly employed in the treatment of patients. On the motion of Mr C. F. Jones, Mr H. T. Bates, seconding, a system was favoured whereby local committees should have the power to appoint or 'dismiss all staff except the medical, nursing and administrative officers. Staff should be under control of these officers. SHOULD ELECT COMMITTEE A final resolution, proposed by Mr G. McK. Ross, seconded by Mrs M. E. Johnston, was that the Bay board reiterates its objection, formally expressed some months ago, to the system of appointment of the local committees instead of election of them by the people. This was passed unanimously. PERSONAL Mr J. W. Steel, of Wellington, has been appointed manager of the New Zealand wrestling team at the Empire Games in Auckland in February. The assistant manager and coach will be Mr V. Rawle, of Auckland. Mr I. J. Berghan, appointed to the Mangonui Hospital Board to till the vacancy created by the recent resignation of Mr W. P. Hales, was welcomed by the chairman (Mr J. W .Hoskint at the board's monthly meeting on Thursday.
