Progress On New Gas Making Plant
Good progress is being made in the installation of the new apparatus for thc Whangarci gas works, and it is anticipated that, the change-over from the old plant to the new will be made in about two months time. The works manager (Mr E. Ellis! said yesterday that a considerable increase in the works output was anticipated, but it was the company’s policy to improve the supply of gas to existing consumers before the reticulation system was extended to bring in new areas of the borough. Replacing two beds, of five retorts each, the new bod of seven retorts was nearly ready. The brickwork, in which 30.000 bricks had been used, was completed, and a drying-out fire had been lit to prepare them for the commencement of production. The iron work was well under way. and it was hoped that this would be completed within a few days.
It was then proposed to erect a new building over the old retort house, which would be dismantled. The old plant would be retained for use in the event of an emergency.
For the first time in history, the United States has taken the lead in the number of bicycles registered, with 17,500,000, latest figures show. Germany is second with 17,000,000, and the British Isles third with 10,000,000.
