PATRIOTIC FUND: CAUTION NOTE
WELLINGTON, Thu. (P.A.).—The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Freyberg, V.C.), who is chairman of the New Zealand Patriotic Fund Board, issued to the members a "note of caution” regarding expenditure for the coming year. Next year’s balance-sheet, he forecast, would look “very different” from the satisfactory balance-sheet shown this year. Cash payments would be made during the coming year for new service men’s homes at Christchurch and Three Kings, Aucklard, and the establishment of the communal war veterans’ village at Okoroire. His Excellency congratulated the members on what had been achieved during the past year, but warned them that expenditure on projects during next year would cost the board a “lot of money.” £12,396 IN GRANTS LAST YEAR During the past year 103 grants and loans totalling £12,396 were made to ex-servicemen for varicus purposes by the board. Twenty-eight of the applications were to enable permanently disabled discharged servicemen to purchase cars to assist in their rehabilitation, or because they were so badly disabled that a car was necessary to enable them to move around. Grants for the purchase of cars totalled £4507.
