NEWS OF THE DAY

LAND-TAX PAYABLE The Commissioner of Taxes draws attention to a notification appearing in today’s issue that the due date for payment of land-tax payable by companies for the current year is Friday, October 7, 1949. Demands will be posted on or about September 30. Land-tax on land held by individuals will not be due until January 16, 1950. This due date will be advertised later. FIRST WOOL SHIPMENTS The first small consignments of the 1949 wool clip in Northland have begun arriving at the Whangarei Town Wharf for shipment by the Northern Steamship Co. Ltd’s, m.v. Ranginui 1 o Auckland. Every year a considerable portion of the northern clip travels south by sea. Today the Ranginui was worked by two non-union gangs handling general cargo at a satisfactory rate. A return cargo of 3000 boxes of butter has been booked for the ship. Light rain delayed work this morning, but a nonperishable deck cargo enabled the men to work between the showers with little loss of time. One hold was also in action before 10 a.m., and a considerable part of the cargo was discharged. THE WRONG TRAIL Many of the would-be fire watchers who responded to the Kaitaia Fire Brigade’s alarm late on Sunday afternoon had a run for their money. Cars, trucks and cycles converged on the main street to intercept the fire engine on its outward journey, the exodus being particularly heavy from the state house area west of the town. Most of those in the procession turned in their tracks to follow the brigade only to find themselves being led in the general direction from which they had come. The cause of the alarm was a chimney fire at a Dominion Road residence which had already been passed and ignored by many would-be spectators. False scents m the form of smoke from back-yard garden fires sent others on the wrong trail.

SNOOKER TOURNAMENT ' A Northland open snooker championship tournament for a trophy donated by Messrs Barton McGill, of Auckland, opened in Whangarei last night. J, Smith beat M. Conaghan 58—63, 53—23, 94—32, and R. H. Conaghan beat D. Moroney 61—70, 62—50, 76—16. M. Conaghan won the first frame against Smith after being 36 points behind in the middle stages. Moroney, who has won two tournaments this year, conceded much in experience to R. H. Conaghan, who capitalised on mistakes with good breaks, including a 26. 110 YEARS AGO TODAY On September 27, 1839, the first deed of purchase of land in Wellington was concluded.
