Whangarei Hockey Season Concludes On Saturday

TWO junior matches between Whangarei and Rodney and a challenge by Ramblers for the Umpires' Shield were the only hockey matches staged at Kensington Park on Saturday. They concluded the 1949 season. i Wfomtfirei won the junior men’s game B—l, but lost the ladies’ 2—4. The men's score was, entirely in keeping with the run of play.

Rodney had the younger and less experienced side, but kept an orthodox and useful defence, especially in the second half when the backs began to move up the field more.

Whangarei led early in the first spell and at. no stage was in danger. Like last year, the ladies’ match was more evenly contested. The Rodney side contained several of its senior rep. players and, as the 4—2 result indicates, held slight superiority throughout. GOOD PLAYERS STILL

The fact that some members of the Whangarei Umpires’ Association were, at one stage, classy players, was clearly indicated when they turned out on Saturday—some for the first time in three years, and others for (he first time since last season.

Ramblers and the umpires have each won the shield once.

Several of the refs, looked as though they would be worthy acquisitions to a chib side, although the general opinion on their part appeared to be that they “would not play this game every Saturday—it’s too rough.” With a forward line led by H. Oldcorn (a rep. fullback), the umpires managed to crack on three doubtful goals, while Ramblers got two equally doubtful scores. Scorers were H. Oldcorn (2) and G. Palmer for the umpires, and E. Ellis and P. Spicer for Ramblers. The game was notable for the number of infringements.
