Mr Attwood also congratulated the Maungakaramea hockey team on winning the Mid-Western championship and s the Maungakaramea Club for being runner-up. Maungakaramea had also won the Magee Shield. He thanked the ladies of the various districts for their splendid efforts in catering not only for representative games, but also for all club game. . Championship games were somewhat marred towards the finis • Attwood. Leading teams had defaulted owing to the fact that several of their players were absent in 1 epi esentative sides. When Mid-Western had lifted the Dargaville Shield from Mangonui at Kaitaia the team had received unbounded hospitality from the noithein This game had been played in a splendid spirit, said the president. MANGONUI CONGRATULATIONS. A ’phone call from the Mangonui president received just prior to the meeting'asked Mr Attwood to conve> to his association expressions of appreciation of the manner in which Mid-Western players had conducted themselves on and off the field at Kaitaia last season. The sole selector (Mr Cyril Child* was congratulated on the success of his selections in both the Daigaviile Shield and Golden Bloom Shield competitions. . . . , Mr Child, in his reply, said that although he was interested in the A team, he was particularly pleased with the the backbone of cricket. In concluding his report. Mr Attwood, referred to the deeds of the New Zealand cricket team in England. “The performances of the team and its wonderful approach to the game should set an example to young players.” he said. Opening date for competitions was fixed for the first Saturday in Noveinbeiv Nominations are to close on October 15. UMPIRING CLASSES. Mr A. Magee, whose umpiring last season was the subject of much favourable comment, offered to take classes for instruction in umpiring. . The first class will be taken in the Otaika Hall on October 17. It is hoped that all players interested will attend and it is later intended to form an umpires' association. Affiliation fees were fixed at two guineas. . , The RV (Auckland! cricket team is to pay its annual visit, to Maungakaramea at Labour Day week-end. It will play the Mid-Western B team on the Saturday and the A side on the Sunday and Monday. Mr A. Magee * Otaika! was appointed sporting recorder. Delegates to the Northland Association were instructed to support zoning of the Dargaville Shield and Golden Bloom Shield competitions. Before opening the meeting the president referred to the death of Mrs g. Lord, who had been a staunch supporter of the game m the district. Mrs Lord had been secretary of the Puwera Club* for many years, and had also acted as official scorer.
