Leapt Info Icy Water

DUNEDIN, Sat. (P.A.).— Erutarem Kuki, a Fijian seaman of the vessel Lautoka did not let snow showers this morning cool his enthusiasm for Dunedin although by the time he had jumped off the ship into the harbour, spent some time in the water and had been dragged out by two men who heard his cries for assistance, his ardour and his person were considerably dampened. As the Lautoka was passing a rocky point in the lower harbour about 7.30 a.m. Australian-bound, Kuki who had been placed on boaz’d after being arres'ed for illegally leaving the ship, left the vessel again and landed with a flop in the cold water. Kuki 3wam towards the shore at Deborah Bay until his strength began to fail in the struggle against the tide rip. RESCUED AND RETURNED His cries for help were heard by Messrs J. Crammond and J. Kenton, who put out in a dinghy in sleety rain, and pulled him out of the water about 200yds from the shore. He was given dry clothing and the Port Chalmers police were contacted. With a hot cup of tea to fortify, him, Kuki was taken out in a fishing launch by the police and returned to his ship which was waiting outside the heads.
