Hamilton Seeking More Hotels
HAMILTON, Wed. iop.' Hamilton's „ population had grown from 1200 to 30,000, but the number of hotels Hive) had not increased, said the deputyMayor (Mr A. L. Fowl in evidence f' before the Licensing Control _ Clolnmission, whcih began its sitting in Hamilton yesterday. • The pressing need for an increase in accommodation for visitors was emphasised by witnesses. Mr Charles Hansen, representing the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, said that outside the city the nearest public house was at Whatawhata, 10 miles away. At present, Hamilton had one hotel for each 6000 of the population. Com- , pared with other towns, it had a clear Claim to a further 10 publicans’ licences. Palmerston North had 15 licences, Wanganui 14, Napier 20, New Plymouth 11, and Nelson 27. The Police Department said there was need for at least two more hotel licences. The hearing was adjourned until today.
