Northland v Auckland In North Island Trial

RAILWAY RUGBY

THE Northland railway Rugby reps play Auckland railways in Whangarei at the week-end in the first of a series of trial games prior to the selection of the North Island team to play South m the annual match for the Sawyers Cup. This is the third season in which these games have been played. < . , , . . . , Last year, two Northlanders played m two further trials but did not gain a place in the North Island team.

From the Northland and Auckland players, a team will be chosen to play Eastern Districts at Frankton on September 4. On December 11, a combined team from the Eastern and middle districts will play Northern district, at Auckland. The final trial takes place on September 25, and the inter-island match at Christchurch on October 8. The Northland area extends from Maungaturoto to Okeihau and Opua, and takes in Dargaville. College v WBHS KAIKOHE, Wed. (Sp.).—Fast, exciting football was seen when Northland College and Whangarei Boys’ High School first and second XVs met on the Bisset Road grounds, Kaikohe, yesterday afternoon. The senior teams fought out an attractive draw, final score being 6—all College took the honours in the second XVs’ game, winning 6—nil. The first XVs provided an exhibition of college football at its best. Both packs scrummed and rucked with vigour and intelligence and the back-lines handled beautifully, only good tackling keeping the scoring down.
