Flood Damage On Gisborne Flats

GISBORNE, Wed. (P.A.). Flood damage and other costs involved by the inundation of May, 1948, of a large portion of the Gisborne Flats totalled half the estimated outlay on the catchment board’s scheme to control future floods in the Waipaoa River. This startling conclusion is revealed in the economic report submitted to the board by the engineer after a study of the effects of flooding and the benefits to be derived from flood freedom on the flats. The cost of the river control scheme recently submitted to the Soil Conservation and Rivers Control Council is estimated at £667.000 of which the council is expected to provide threequarters by way of subsidy. Losses associated with the flood aggregated over £314.000.
