Price Controls And Freedom

AUCKLAND. Wed., may be that civilisation is now advancing so rapidly in the field of commerce, and trading is assuming such a complex nature, that the freedom of past years may not be possible or desirable for the future,” said the president of the Auckland Master Grocers’ Association (Mr D. Cunningham) at the annual meeting yesterday. ‘‘Ten years of increasing controls over business have made it difficult to determine which, if any, of the controls should be regarded as permanent., and which should be lifted,” he said.

If it could be proved that price control was in the best interests of the community, the association's executive would play its part in ensuring its smooth operation. However, the grocery trade should not be singled out by Price Tribunal inspectors. Import control had achieved its purpose if it was introduced solely to conserve London funds, but, as a means of assisting secondary industries, it had a disservice to the community, Mr Cunningham said.
