Kumaras At V- Each
Yesterday a Whangarei shopper paid 3/2 for three large kumaras, one of which was found to contain a decayed spof. Housewives who have decided to use kumaras as a standby during the potato shortage are likely to find that supplies are not as plentiful as last year. In 1948, fair quantities of kumaras were planted and a good growing season provided adequate crops, but this year fewer were planted and the season was not the best. A small quantity of kumaras is believed to be held in pits. In Auckland the retail price is between 6d and 8d a lb. A shortage of pumpkins is likely to occur in the near future. Although a fair planting was made, continual wet weather has turned many rotten, especially those which were held for a late winter sale. Other vegetables are in fairly plentiful supply.
Mr Frank William Gamble, who was headmaster of the Mt Albert Grammar School for 25 years, died yes terday at the age of 67. Mr Gamble took prominent part in the annual >ld boys’ reunion at the school on Friday, and his death came unexpectedly. He retired from the headmastership at the end of 1946,
