Coal Crisis Averted
AUCKLAND, Tue. (P.A.).—The coal crisis which threatened Auckland ivhan work ceased on the waterfront last week has been temporarily averted by unloading about 2000 tons of coal from the collier Kaitangata by a harbour board crane. Supplementary supplies of Waikato coal also have been received. A further 1000 tons of Westport coal is due on Thursday in the Kiwitea, which already has discharged part of her cargo at Portland. The Union Company intends to unload the Kiwitea in the same way as the Kaitangata if the dispute continues. There is therefore no, immediate likelihood of gas rationing. Sugar supplies are assured for at least two or three weeks. Harbour ferry services can be maintained for a month on present supplies.
