Ex-Royal Navalmen

An appeal for ex-Royal Navalmen to support their club v:as made by the newly-elected president of the Whangarei branch of the .x-R.N. Association at the annual meeting last night. He said considerable strides had been made in the first year of the club’s existence, with the acquisition of a set of indoor bowls as the most valuable asset.

Appreciation of the work done by the retiring president (Mr A. McKenzie) and secretary (Mr V. Harrison) in the first difficult year was expressed by acclamation. Arrangements were made to include all men who served under the White Ensign in those entitled to attend the annual reuniop next Friday. Officers elected were: President, Mr G. D. Gray; vice-presidents, Messrs B. Thornton and E. S. Ross; secretary, Mr P. D. Corsbie; treasurer, Mr V. Harrison; auditor, Mr R. V'arren; solicitor, Mr A. M. Steadman; steward, Mr T. Hayes; committee, Messrs L. Waugh, J. Harold J. Roberts. H. Wilkinson, ■ N. Goodhue.

Speaking of Amethyst', exploit, Mr Gray said that the meeting must feel proud of the ship’s exploit in running the gauntlet in proper Navy style. One member recalled that the only ship to attempt to run the Dardanelles in 1915 was also named Amethyst.
