Town .Hall was invaded last night by a happy la mi of entertainers from many parts of Northland, Each compel iI or was a class winner from his or her own district and last night, was almost, ihc culmination of Northland’s Talent Quest organised and conducted by the Whaiigarei Progressive Society. From last night's performers flie adjudicators have selected 1 ;-j to go forward to do battle with the Whaiigarei winners tonight in l he all-Northland grand finals.

Hincrnoa and Andy Anderson (Kaikohe), Ossie Wright i Kaikohe); senior instrumental: Colcen Pearce (Dargaville) Boli Carlson (Kaitaia).

The Maori Hnka team from Tautoro were judged a class on its own, and they also go forward tonight. The show last night was quite lengthy with little time wasted, but 1.0 give tiie adjudicators some breathing

space. Fred McDermott held a scavenger hunt and he and Norman Harrison conducted a short, quiz.

The junior vocal section had four en-

tries: Miss Pat Geddes (Kaitaia) “A Hundred and Sixty Acres”; Miss Pat Whalford (Hikurangil "That’s an Irish Lullaby”: Ilariata Farekuru (Kaikohe) “Brush the Tear From Your Eye"; and Miss A.nnctte Barlow (Kaitaia) •*J Heard You Go By."

Douglas Martin and Owen Keen (Kaikohe) were the only entrants in the instrumental section, with their cornet; duet. Variety attracted three: The Three Stooges; from Kaikohe in a cross-talk act—One Missing, lona Stanton (Kaitaia) in a. song and tap dance, and the Tautoro Haka team of 10 boys in a very stirring performance. S KNI OK COMPETITION S Competitors in the senior vocal numbered seven: Victor Eisenhut iKaikohe) "Make Believe", A. Hardy (Kaitaia) “Shortenin' Bread"; Joe Angell (Kaikohe) “My Defences are Down"; Elma Hansen (Kaikohe) “Wher’cr You Walk"; Mrs E. Rule (Kaitaia) sang and accompanied herself on the piano, "String of Pearls”; Roy Dysart 'Kai-l-mho "Because,” and the Maori Male Voice Quartette (Kaikohe) "Sweet Sabbath Eve. - ’ Variety artists were: Coleen Pearce (Dargaville) who danced a Russian dance. Hinemoa and Andy Anderson (Kaikohe) vocal duetists sang "The Rose in Her Hair,” Rewa Pepene and Frank Cross (Hikurangi), also vocal duet with guitar accompaniment, Ossie Wright (Kaikohe) a humorous monologue "The Plumber.” Coleen Pearce again entertained in the instrumental section with a pianoforte solo ‘‘Waltz in C sharp minor” by Chopin. Others were Bob Carlsen (Kaitaia) with his piano-accordeon. Elder Jenkins (Kaikohe) a trumpeter, and Frank Cross • Hikurangi) with his yuitar and a song.

To hazard conjecture on the relative- merits of town and country would he folly, but it is quite obvious that tonight’s show will have all the finalists right on their toes and good entertainment, should be produced. The Whacigaroi Junior ‘ Band, order •he baton of Mr J. Dobson, played two numbers that were much appreciated Scylla Call-in was accompanist.
