Seamens Ban Causes Riff
MELBOURNE, Tue. (1 p.m.).—The decision by the emergency committee of the Australian Council of Trade Unions that the ban by the Seamen’s Union on the unloading of coal from the freighter Haligonian Duke was unjustified, is causing a rift among militant unions. The Melbourne executive of the Waterside Workers’ Federation endorsed a recommendation by the council and demanded that the ban be lifted. The Federal executive of the Waterside Workers’ Federation, meeting in Sydney, will decide this issue. Meanwhile, the Victorian secretary of the Seamen’s Union (Mr W. Bord) has stated that his union will continue the ban.
The Premier (Mr Hollway) has deferred his call for volunteer labour until tomorrow afternoon, and has expressed the hope that in the meantime union labour will be arranged.
