NEWS OF THE DAY

BROKE THROUGH TACKLE A woman in Cornwall, England, is collecting badges of all Rugby unions throughout the world. The NARU last night received a letter from her asking for its badge so that she might display it, among the many others, in her village inn. The request was rather embarrassing to delegates as the NARU does not possess a badge. They "broke through the tackle’’ however by deciding to send Miss Mannheim a Northland referee's badge. This is shield-shaped with the leters NARRA in gold on a black background. Twenty active referees have this certificate.

FIVE LEADING REFEREES Northland's five leading Rugby referees, in order of ranking are, F. T. C. Williams (Whangarei), 11. Jones (Whangarei), J. E, French (Dargaville), C. Reed (Whangarei) and H. Mabbitt (Warkworth). Messrs Williams and Mabbitt hold their New Zealand theory certificate. These facts were revealed at the monthly meeting of the NARU management committee in Whangarei last night.' The panel of five names was forwarded to tire NZRU, at the request of the national body, as a guide in the making of New Zealand appointments.

PARKINSON CHESS CHAMPION J. Parkinson retained the championship title of the Whangarei Chess Club last night in the fifth round of matches. He drew with J. Stewart and so held a half-point lead from the j’outhful K. Kimber. Parkincon had four wins and a draw in live matches. Kimber had one loss in the live rounds. Final points scored were: Parkinson 4*. Kimber 4, F. Cooper, J. Stewart 3£, N. Wright, J'. Milnes, K. Haslett, R. Crawford 3. W. Rae 2t, E. Wright, W. Davis, P. Royt 2. R. Kehoe. L.'Keyte IJ, D. Joynt, R. K. Maxwell 1. Last night’s results were: Parkinson drew with Stewart; Kimber beat Milnes; N. Wright beat Davis; Haslett beat E. Wright; Cooper beat Crawford; Boyt beat Keye, Rae beat Kelme. The president of ’he Don Maxi will probably be w.'.rmg Northland on August 12. At 'he NARU meeting in Whangarei last night. Mr J. A. Finlavson. New Zealand vicepresident. informed delegates that Mr

Max was anxious to visit ail unions in New Zealand and would appreciate an opportunity to meet officials of the NARU and its sub-unions, at the .first opportunity. It was decided to invite Mr Max to Whangarei on August 12 when a round-table talk could be had with him after the monthly meeting of the management committee. Mr Max will watch the Prince of Wales Cup match the following day. The emergency committee was deputed to make arrangements for the presidential visit. LURE OF FIRESIDES Usually Whangarei people can be relied on to observe the common courtesies. In the Town Hall' last night, however, two breaches occurred. Immediately a motion in support of compulsory military service had been passed the audience moved towards the exits. Speakers and chairman were denied their customary vo<es of thanks as the lure of the homely fireside became insistent.

SNOOKER TOURNEY Play in the Northland junior snooker championship began at Whangarei last night when D. Comer beat I. Cebalo, 37—45, 59—29, 83—20. In a second game A. Graham beat I. Brocas. 87—25, 62—53. Best break of the evening was a 2fi by Comer. Tonight's games are B. Nocine v K. Johnson and N. Wilson v D. Harrison. FACT PRODUCER”

During his political career the Minister of Lands and Rehabilitation (Mr Skinner) has probably heard himself described in various terms, but it is likely that he heard a new one in Whangarei last night. He was the principal speaker at a meeting in support of the compulsory military training scheme, on which a referendum will be taken next month, and he was preceded by local speakers, one of whom was Mr J. D. Gerard. Stating that he did not propose to deal with details and facts concerned in the scheme, Mr Gerard left these aspects to Mr Skinner, "a professional factTie specnlh reduced lines of silk . nd cotton vc'-r;. and pantecs are quite a strong feature at Henry Wilson's.
