I wish, through your columns, to congratulated Cr Homer on his sense of fair play and justice. It shows how

far we have

COUNCILLOR fallen from our CONGRATULATED, former high

standard of justice when the Government,- after agreeing to put the issue of conscription to the public, can use its owii authority and the taxpayers’ money to partisan one side and prejudice the voters.

I have never met Cr Homer tnor, to my knowledge, seen him), but I am glad that there is at least one man in Whangarei who, in spite of the Government propaganda, still tries to think fairly and honestly, and is not afraid to voice his convictions.

As one who can see nothing wrong with the ultimate ideal professed 1 by Communism, and everything wrong with its doctrine that “the end justifies every means, ethical or noil-ethical,” I hope that Cr Homer is not a member of the Communist Party. It will be a sad day for democracy when a Communist must show us the way of justice and freedom.—MOßA COTTON.

The Attorney-General (Mr Mason* returned to Auckland from Suva by air yesterday with Mrs Mason, after a month's health visit. Mr Mason, who looked well, said he hoped he had benefited from his holiday. He left for Wellington today.
