Fined For Having Liqyor Near Dance
Having liquor in the vicinity of dance halls cost three men a total of £7/12/- when they were fined in the Whangarei Court this morning by Mr W. C. Harley, S.M. Constable Davis said he was on duty in Hikurangi at 9.25 p.m. when he noticed Ngaro Komene with a bottle of beer in his hand about a chain from the dance hall. When he approached Komene threw (he bottle over a fence. He retrieved it on order from the constable, and threw it on the ground where it broke. He was lined £2 with 10/- costs. A similar fine was imposed on Wehi Johnson, who had been seen with a bottle of wine near tire Whangarei Town Hall. Constable Burnside had caught Johnson hiding the bottle under some steps. With Johnson was Walter George Hill, who was fined £2 with 10/- costs and 2/- mileage on a similar charge. TheyNboth adnrited drinking from the bottle, and that they had been to the dance.
Captain E. W. Brookes, formerly of the Royal Army Service Corps, won the King’s Prize at Bisley with a total of 278 put of a possible 300. Brookes, who is 47 years of age, competed twice previously in the King's Prize. Lieutenants S.F. Wheeler and A. P. Webster were next with aggregates of 276 each. Wheeler, having the best score over 1000yds was placed second.
