Probation For Maori Chief

AUCKLAND, 'Fri. (P.A.>—Morore Piripi, a 69-year-old Maori chief, who appeared for sentence in the Supreme Court yesterday on a charge of arson and one of attempted arson, was told by Mr Justice Callan that he was guilty of a stupid exploit. Piripi was on crutches. Defending counsel said he was a chief of the Ngatiwai tribe. He had previously an unblemished record and was highly regarded in Northland. Depositions stated that Piripi was living with a younger woman who left him for a younger man and “in a fit of blind jealousy, Piripi set fire to the house in which the couple were living.’’ Only slight damage was done before the fire was arrested. Piripi made anothe'r attempt and on that occasion broke a leg. The judge admitted Piripi to two years’ probation conditional upon living where and with whom the probation officer directed.
