121 Seamen Leave Ships

AUCKLAND, Mon. (Sp.).—One hundred and twenty-one men have deserted their ships in Auckland since January this year “Ship desertion nas occome a proper racket,” a shipping company representative said. “Men are leaving England with the sole intention of deserting here. It makes it hard from the shipping companies’ point of view.” Representations have been made by several companies for increases in penalties. Although two deserters in Wellington were recently fined £SO each and placed on probation for two years, the Auckland Courts have chosen to impose lighter penalties. Magistrates have pointed out that legisation has been passed providing for the deportation of deserters, but so far this legislation has not been invoked.
