Abyssinian Revolt Report
LONDON, Sun.: (11 a.m.).—A largescale revolt in Abyssinia with a death roll of 300 is reported by Italian newspapers and quoted by Rome radio. The radio eaid most of the casualties resulted from heavy battles near the capital, Addis Ababa, and that Government forces withdrew to avoid further fighting that might spread the revolt. The radio added that on May 18 the rebels ambushed a strong Government force which was escorting the heir to the Abyssinian Throne. The Prince, however, was saved as he was not in the car usually reserved for him. Emperor Haile Selassie has been claiming a “reunion” of Eritrea and Abyssinia and ne seni a message to the United Nations General Assembly when it discussed the Italian colonies question recently, urging this action. Many observers forecast local trouble if his wishes were not met. Reports of the revolt were carried in most of the Rome newspapers The stories, carried under a Djibouti dateline, stated that a e.jellion broKe out a few days ago. The reports said that Italians still living in Abyssinia helped to convey the Emperor’s-troops to the main battle between Addis Ababa and Dessie.
