Nothing Sinister'
CHRISTCHURCH, Mon. (P.A.)— “There is nothing sinister in. my telegram telling miners to discontinue financial support,” said the Dominion president of the Carpenters’ Union (Mr F* L. Langley) this afternoon.
Miv Langley was commenting on a Press Association message from Greymouth advising abandonment of collections at West Coast mines for th© deregistered carpenters’ union in Auckland, and stating that a letter o£ explanation was following. Expressing concern at the impression that might have been caused by the report, Mr Langley said: “The carpenters submitted a statement to the acting chairman of the Federation of Labour conference (Mr F. P. Walsh) expressing our thanks to all who had supported us and informing them that: in view of the conference decision, further financial aid was unnecessary, “The acting chairman failed to maka an announcement and the reporter, at the conference who was made aware of the statement, failed to publish it. “We therefore have been compelled to notify all unions who levied themselves on our behalf to discontinue the levy as there is sufficient cash in hand to meet immediate claims foe sustenance.
“The letter reported to be following this announcement does not mention financial assistance.
“It is a brief report of what transpired at the federation’s conference in connection with the carpenters’ dispute and is being sent to the Wesil Coast miners" organisation out of courtesy, in view of their having contributed more than £IOOO towards our lockout fund.” |
