2 Sawdust Greens For Whangareil Lady Bowlers

TWO full-sized sawdust bowling greens are to be laid down by the Marsden Ladies’ Bowling Club on a property it is acquiring in Main’s Avenue, Whangarei. The greens are expected to be ready for play at the start of next season.

A large gathering which attended the club’s first prize-giving social last night had this information from the president (Mrs A. S. Quenncll) in her opening address.

Guests of the evening were the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs W. Jones), the president of the Northland Bowling Centre (Mr B. G. Smith), memberds of kindred clubs, and husbands of women bowlers.

Great progress had been made in the first year of the club’s life, said Mrs Quennell, who thanked voluntary workers, donors of trophies, and bowling clubs in Whangarei which had unstintingly assisted the new club. Mr Smith said he was proud to represent 1600 men bowlers at the first annual prize-giving function. Although the ladies’ club was not affiliated to the Northland Centre he expressed the hope—at least of all the husbands—that it would not be long before it did. BOROUGH SUPPORT

‘‘lf is obvious that you have many friends and your success is assured,” said the Mayor, when he congratulated the club on its remarkable progress under adverse conditions. He warned the members to beware of Mr Smith’s remarks.

“Now you girls just be careful about this affiliation,” he said.

“Mr Smith prefaced his remarks by saying you were understood to be a very wealthy club.” Mr Jones assured the club the full support of the Borough Council, which was willing to help those who were industrious to help themselves. He instanced the fine effort made by the girls of the basketball association. Other speakers were Mr E. J. Dingle (RSA), Messrs H. Smith and F. Thomas (Whangarei), and Mr Harvey Webb (Kensington). FIRST BIRTHDAY CAKE. Artists who contributed to the success of a very happy function were Mrs Mason (songs), Mr E. T. Dennis (songs) and Mr Alwyn Owens (violin solos). Mr Fred Jones was a spirited leader of community singing. During supper a first-birthday cake was cut and distributed by Mrs Queuriell. Players who were awarded trophies during the evening were: Club champion, Mrs E. J. Dingle; runner-up, Mrs M. M. Baigent. Firstyear champion, Mrs Quincey; runnerup, Mrs Macpherson. Champion pairs, Mesdames E. J. Dingle and F. Jones. Champion rink, Mesdames Ford, Boag, E. Leese and J. McMillan: Whitelaw Trophy, Mrs E. Nankivell; runner-up, Mrs E. J. Dingle. Hendy Trophies, Miss Coulton and Mrs J. McMillan; runners-up, Mrs Jones and Mrs Dingle.
