Got £IOOO Brooch With False Cheque

WELLINGTON, Thu. (R.A.) Charged with obtaining a diamond and platinum brooch valued at £IOOO from a Wellington jeweller by falsely representing that a cheque drawn on a Wellington bank and signed “E. K. Matthews” was a good and valid order for that amount, Edward Keifh Matthews, labourer, appeared before Mr J. S. Hanna, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence. In opposing application for bail, Sen-ior-Detective Callaghan said accused had just arrived from Australia. Nothing was known of his previous history and the woman with whom he had arrived was facing a similar charge in Auckland. Bail was refused.
