Did Edney Suicide?
AUCKLAND, Thu. (P.A.).—Was Frederick Edney, the dancing teacher found dead in his flat on Saturday night, murdered or was death due to barbiturate poison, self administered, accidentally or deliberately? This question is believed to be exercising the minds of detectives investigating the case. The contents of Edney’s stomach have been sent to the Government analyst (Mr K. M. Griffin) for examination.
Barbiturate poison is believed to have been found in specimens removed from the body. It is still thought that Edney was attacked at the Queen Street entrance by someone with, or without, murderous intentions. BOTTLE OF DRUGS
One theory is that he might have later taken the drug to relieve his pain.
It is understood the police took possession of a bottle which had contained a barbiturate drug. Questioned on the telephone why the £SOO reward notice was worded “Alleged Murder,” the Commissioner of Police (Mr James Cummings) stated in Wellington today that, when the offer was decided upon, no cause of death was available. The Commissioner admitted the case might, or might not, involve murder—he could not say yet. He also said he had not yet received a report on the result of the Government Analyst’s investigations.
