CHILLED AUSTRALIAN EGGS FOR WHANGAREI

TO relieve the acute shortage of eggs in Whangarei, the Internal Marketing Division has undertaken to send dOO dozen chilled eggs in three instalments.

The first shipment of 100 dozen was due today. Distribution to grocers and retailers throughout the borough will be rhade by the North Auckland Farmers’ Coop., Ltd.

One hundred dozen is the supply allocated for one week. Following shipments may vary in quantity Imported from Australia the eggs have already been supplied to other centres. The eggs are said to remain fresh for up to two weeks. Mainly because of its interest shown last year when endeavours were made to form an egg floor in Whangarei, and because of it having facilities for the work the NAF was approached by the Internal Marketing Division to act as distributor.

The NAF w'ill receive the eggs, recrate them and conduct the allocation to the various egg-selling establishments in the borough. This supply of chilled eggs is only regarded as a temporary measure to relieve the acute shortage.

BELOW REQUIREMENTS Over a three-week period 500 dozen eggs are normally purchased in Whangarei, so the 300 dozen will be distributed to retailers on a pro rata basis. Praise for the Australian chilled eggs was given by a Whangarei storekeeper, Mr F. W. Higgins, of Mill Road, who, when in Auckland recently, lasted them and brought some back with him.

Auckland has been supplied with the imported eggs for a considerable time, with the result that, in the past few weeks, there has been no shortage there at all.

Mr Higgins said that while in Auckland he heard no complaints about the eggs, and he himself thought that they were 100 per cent. One lot he brought back to Whangarei with him he kept for nine days before using, and noticed no difference in flavour or quality.
