Rabone, Mooney Put On 176 For Seventh Wicket

LONDON, Tue. (10.20 a.m.).—New Zealand drew with MCC at Lords, thanks largely to a seventh-wicket stand of 176 by Rabone and Mooney, who batted together for three hours 20 minutes and raised the score from 94 to 170, while rain also had a slight influence and took two and a half hours off the life of the match.

Rabone and Mooney established a new record for the seventh-wicket partnership for New Zealand teams in England. The previous record was that of C. S. .Dempster and I. B. Cromb, who had an uniinished partnership of 77 for the seventh wicket against Glamorgan at Swansea in 1931. The match concluded yesterday was the first occasion during the tour on which New Zealand showed a deficit on the first innings. Rabone (92) and Mooney (102), who made the best part of their stand before the King and Queen yesterday, batted for 20 minutes before lunch, when rain drove the teams indoors after the addition of 10 runs. Play began again at 2.30, and Rabone, after cutting the slow lefthander, Broderick, for four, was dropped at fine-leg by Watkins, off Laker, when he was 84. RABONE BOWLED it was the second time he had been dropped, Edrich having missed him at slip when he was 26; Griffith lost an opportunity of stumping him yesterday when the ball hit the wicketkeeper on the chest. When Rabone was 92, however, he was bowled by a ball well pitched up by Laker. He had batted for 3 hours 35 minutes and had hit seven fours.

Mooney continued quietly, and, in the nineties, he on-drove and pulled Broderick for two boundaries.' MOONEY’S FIRST 100

He stayed at 99 for about 10 minutes and then took a single off Broderick to bring up his first century of the tour in just on fqur hours (eight fours).

Edrich took the new ball at 299 and, at the other end, Bailey began an attempt to get some life out of the dull, damp wicket. He bounced one or two, and then Mooney lifted him high back over the wicket for Mann to run round and take a simple catch.' It was a fine effort by both Rabone and Mooney, and everybody sympathised with the former for so narrowly missing his century. TAME CONCLUSION The ninings lasted for 35 minutes after Mooney left, Burtt, Cave and Cresswell adding a few runs, which were worthily, though perhaps not brightly, gathered. The New Zealand innings occupied 6 houi's 35 minutes. Edrich and Robertson took some useful batting practice until the latter was out to a good catch by Sutcliffe at cover, off Burtt. MCC’s second innings was notable for at least one thing—both Hadlee and Wallace bowled to round off the match, to the amusement of the remainder of the New Zealand team.
