Reclamation Continues On Port Whangarei Rd
Reclamation .work has re-commenced on the Port Whangarei Road reclamation, where the Whangarei Harbour Board dredges were engaged before they were diverted to deepen the berth and swinging basin at Portland. When completed the work will serve two purposes: Provide valuable land in the light industrial area and also divert the Waiarohia Creek from its present channel to join the harbour a mile lower down.
This is being done to divert the silt which is carried down the creek and taken into the town basin by the incoming tide. Stopbanks have been erected round the greater part of the area to be reclaimed, but the mud available at the lower end was not suitable for the purpose, so this part of the work was delayed for some weeks. Apart from a short run to test the machinery, the dredge commenced work this morning for the first, time since the plant was turned back from Portland, and a -stream of muddy water was pumped out across the reclaimed area where the level has already been built up considerably.
