H. Parkin And Fay Win Mangakahia Short Head

A SPLENDID run by the bitch Fay gave H. Parkin, of Maunu, Whangarei, the Te Karaka Estate Cup as the winner of the. short head event at the Mangakahia sheep dog trials at Parakao yesterday.

Fay scored full points for the head and two drives and lost only 1£ on the pull, one on the hurdles and three on work at the yard. She went out on an excellent line, headed perfectly and lifted the sheep quietly. The pull to the foot of the hill left little to be desired and the first drive was steady and straight.

After a good second drive, Fay affected a splendid recovery when the sheep split at the yard.

CONSISTENT BEN The consistent Ben, owned by A. Boese (MSromaku) was second, two points behind Fay. Ben seldom fails to gain a place but has yet to score a win.

The four placed dogs scored the possible for the head.

BETH WINS WAKELIN CUP The eight dogs with the highest aggregates in the long and short heading events ran off to decide the winner of the E. Wakelin Cup and miniature. The eight best aggregates were:— Marston and his bitch Beth capped off a very successful week with a half-point win over Gaskeli and Scott. A number of the competitors and particularly Curly Boese and Ben, struck difficult sheep. WINNING EFFORT Marston and Beth won with perfect work at the yard and a quick penning. They gained position approaching the pen when the sheep were hardly under control, and with quick thinking and manoeuvring' retained it in what was definitely a winning finale.
