Labour Party's Conference Opens
WELLINGTON, Sat. (Sp.) .—Attended by'more than 500 delegates, the 33rd annual conference of the New Zealand Labour Party opened at the Wellington Town Hall this afternoon. Apart from the defence plans of the Government, the most important topic will be methods of dealing with Communists.
The conference, which will continue until Wednesday afternoon, will also decide upon the policy of the party for the coming general election. The Prime Minister (Mr Fraser) will address ‘the conference on several occasions.
Other Cabinet Ministers will attend and deal with items within their portfolios, and they may give some indication of likely legislation for the session of Parliament which is expected to commence late in June.
IMPORTANT SUBJECTS. Taxation, price control, stabilisation, butter and petrol rationing, and labour legislation will be well to the fore: After the presentation of the annual report of the president (the Hon. James Roberts, M.L.C.) and that of the national executive by the secretary (Mr A. J. MacDonald), the remainder of the afternoon was spent in setting up committees. Conferences of womeri and farming delegates and outings around Wellington will occupy Sunday.
The real business will commence on Monday, when the Prime Minister will present the report of the Parliamentary Labour Party. During the conference reports will be made on preparations from the general election. The annual election of officers will be held on Monday.
