Month's Gaol For Striking Policeman
AUCKLAND,. Fri. (PA.)—“I . will not tolerate assaults on our constables in the execution of their duty; there is but one peiialty for the offence and that is imprisonment.” This reminder was given yesterday by Mr F. McCarthy, S.M., when Bob Penney, 34, admitted assaulting Constable R. N. Cuthbert, on May 12. The magistrate said Penney had no right to assault the constable, but he would take into account the submission that accused was drunk. Mr McCarthy passed sentence of one month’s imprisonment with hard labour. On further charges of mischief and being without lawful excuse on enclosed premises, which he .admitted, Penney was convicted and discharged.
