70,000 Motorists’ Names Recorded
WELLINGTON, Wed. (P.A.) The names of about 70,000 motorists with one or more serious traffic offences against them, are neatly carded in a giant filing system at the head office in Wellington of the Transport Department. Each month details of up to 1000 new traffic offenders above the “minor” classes are added. Eight hundred or 900 prosecutions follow the receipt of their names, stated an official of the department. Last month alone 11 drivers were found intoxicated in charge, 17 were caught driving in a “dangerous manner,” 24 drove carelessly or inconsiderately, 48 had no driver’s licence, 114 were without a warrant of fitness, and 232 were charged with speeding. 84 KOAD DEATHS The department is determined to end such conduct among motorists—conduct which, it states, has already led to 84 road deaths this year—and as one move in this direction it may begin making more use of its power to require driver’s licences to be examined and their holders tested at any time. “There is no question of our waving a big stick at motorists,” said the official.
“We are only too anxious to help them in any way we can, but we have sworn to reduce road deaths.”
