BROADLEA HERD SIRE MAKES 185 GUINEAS
TOP price at the Broadlee Jersey stud sale, 185gn., was paid for the senior herd sire, Neatherleigh Bonny Owl, by Mr 11. M. Thompson, of Tui Glen, Kaitaia. ; A rising four-year-old cow, Broadlee Treasure which has produced 8481 b. fat in two lactations, was purchased by Mr T. Vinac, of Kaitaia, for 1374gn. Throughout the sale, which was conducted, on account of Mr R. J. Duddy, Puhipuhi, by Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., with Mr W. J. McCaw, of Hamilton, as auctioneer, bidding was keen and prices remained at a high level. Buyers were present from Kaitaia to the Waikato.
. The senior herd sire was a famous Owler bull which was judged show champion at Whangarei in 1940. He was by Greenmeadows Gay Owl, son of the champion butterfat bull Penrose Jolly Emperor and Greenmeadows Melba, H.C. C.0.R., 7651 b fat. An average price of 46 guineas was paid for the 23 pedigree cows sold,, while the in-calf heifers made 40 guineas, and yearling' heifers 19 guineas.
An outstanding line of in-calf grade heifers averaged £lB/3/-, selling up to £l9/10/-, and the line of quality rising yearling heifers realised £B.
Mr Vinac, of Kaitaia, purchased another high priced cow, Broadlee Laburnum for 85 guineas. , - • • Broadlee Joy Bell, a daughter of Broadlee Laburnum realised 721 guineas to the bid of Mr W. If. Reed, Puhipuhi, Whakapara. Other outstanding cows "were Beaulieu Valeta bought f0r.70 guineas by Mr J. B. K. Taylor, Whananaki, while her daughter Broadlee Valeta made 30 guineas on the bid of Mr M. Wallace, of Kaitaia.’
The junior herd sire, Tui Glen Bonny Boy was sold for 50 guineas to Mr C. V. Cutforth, Whatitiri. . Other realisations of 35gns and over were:—Ciearbrook Sheba, H.C., Mr W. A feature of .the sale was the keen competition for the excellent line ofgrade cows, which, sold at prices considerably in excess of recent realisations. The whole line averaged £l9/7/-, top price of £32 being paid for a grand quality, good open framed Jersey cow. The cows were presented for sale in excellent condition, nearly all were calving during July and early August, and represented over 50 per cent of the herd which averaged. ,3551b.' fat, factory returns, this season. .
