Honeymoon Cruise In Tutukaka Ketch
AUCKLAND, Tue. (Sp.).—Early this morning two newly-wed couples left Auckland in the 36ft Tutukaka-built ketch Galatea for Tahiti, on the way to the United States. The husbands are two American exservicemcn, Messrs David Strahl and J. P. Halford, who were married on Thursday and Friday respectively. Mr Halford and his wife, formerly Miss Anne McKeevef, who was for a time a mannequin in Auckland, and Mr Strahl, came to New Zealand about 18 months ago from the United States to study at Auckland University College, the men under the G.I. Bill of Rights. Mrs Strahl is a New Zealander. BUILT BY MR W. WATSON The Galatea was built by Mr W. Watson, of Tutukaka, and launched in 1946. It is equipped with both transmitting and receiving radio apparatus, and is powered by a two-cylinder, 11 horse-power Diesel engine, which .gives the craft a speed of six knots. The boat was formerly the cutter Freda. New Zealand was a fine country in many ways, but he did not wish to stay here, said Mr Strahl. It was spoiled by the high cost of manufactured goods and the five-day week.
People said that the cost of living was higher in America, but did not take into account that the average wage was twice as high there as in New Zealand.
After visiting Honolulu and the United States, the party intended eventually to settle in Queensland.'
