Survey Ship On Loan To N.Z.
WELLINGTON. Fri., (Sp.).—HMAS Lachlan, a surveying vessel, is to be loaned by Australia to New Zealand for three years.
Announcing this yesterday, the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) said the Lachlan would be brought into commission as soon as possible by the Royal New Zealand Navy. An advance party of two officers and 27 ratings was at present on the way to Fremantle, via in HMNZS Pukaki. Mr Jones said Cabinet had now approved of an order being placed in the United Kingdom for the building of a surveying vessel of the Bay class for the Royal New Zealand Navy. The Minister said the urgency of commencing survey wrrk had been paramount in the New Zealand Naval Board’s deliberations, and when it became apparent that a surveying ship could not be obtains ‘ quick’.v from the Royal Navy, negotiations were commenced with the Australian Government to obtain such a vessel on loan for the intervening yoars firm the Rrv'.il Australian Wsvv.
