DEMAND FOR HEIFERS AT SHORTHORN SALE

A POOR inquiry for bulls but a decidedly stronger demand for young female stock was evident at the third annual sale of the Northland branch of the New Zealand Milking Shorthorn Association, held ,at Kamo during the week. From a catalogue of 14 bulls and 30 heifers, three bulls and 22 heifers changed hands.

Compared with the values ruling at last year’s Shorthorn sale, heifers were worth from sgn to lOgn more. Owing to the relatively early date of the sale, practically no demand was evident for bulls. The top-priced animal, which made 55gn., was a rising three-year-old heifer, Abingdon Scylla, entered by the association’s president (Mr A. Wiblin, Hukerenui). Winning the first place in the show class, Abingdon Scylla was by Abingdon Oswald, from Abingdon Sylvia. On both the sire and dam side of her pedigree she traces back to Effjay Sapphire’s Treasure (imp.), son of Effjay Sapphire, holder of four world records, including 131Jlb milk in 24 hours, 4.3 test, and 20,044J1b milk in 213 days. The purchaser of this stylish heifer was Mr W. C. H. Stevens, of Kaukapakapa. As the range of prices indicated, the demand for heifers was steady throughout the sale, with the last few lots selling as well as the first. For the 22 heifers sold, the average realisation was 27tgn
