Canadians Praise NZ Farm Research
AUCKLAND, Mon. (Sp.).—Dr W. iE. van Steenburgh, research adviser I to the Canadian Department of Agri- | culture, has recommended to his Gov- | ernment that two scientists should be j sent to the Dominion for a year to j study what is being done. | A delegate to the Pacific Science j Congress, Dr van Steenburgh, said | last night that the size of the Can- | adian delegation reflected the growI ing interest of his country in what was being done here and in Australia. “I also hope to see in the future some sort of equal exchange of research workers instituted between our two countries,” he added. However, there were difficulties to this. Scientists in Canada were paid on an average £2OO a year more than those in New Zealand and it was doubtful whether a New Zealander could live in Canada on what he received here. “To me it is phenomenal what has been done in this country in the dairy industry, seeing that most of the soils have been developed quite recently,” said Professor D. G. Laird, professor of soils at the University of British Columbia. “At home, if we can run a cow to two acres, we think we are doing very well, but here you aspire to a cow per acre, or better.
“You have the advantage over us in rainfall, but that does not minimise the good work done in agricultural science in this country.”
