Passenger's Allegations
AUCKLAND, Wed. (P.A.J—A member of a party of Royal Air Force men seconded to the New Zealand Air Force openly boasted on the voyage cl the Mataroa from Britain that he was a Communist, said Mr Arthur L. Bayliss. an Auckland businessman, who returned in the Mataroa.
Mr Bayliss told a reporter today that, on arrival in Wellington on Sunday, he reported the matter to a boarding New Zealand Air Force officer.
The conduct of some immigrants aboard the Mataroa was the subject of comment in Parliament by Mr W. S. Goosman (O—Piako) yesterday. Mr Bayliss said today that ii was noticed early in the voyage that when the band played the National Anthem at the close of a picture show every evening, many assisted immigrants and the RAF man, who was not in uniform, remained seated. “SOME POOR TYPES”
“I spoke to several of them about it,” Mr Bayliss added. “Some said they could please themselves. The RAF man replied that the King meant nothing to him. “He admitted he was a Communist, whereupon Mr Bayliss told him, in outspoken language, what ho thought of him. r
Mr Bayliss expressed the opinion to an interviewer that some of the immigrants were “poor types." addding that there were thousands of worthy people in Britain who desired to come to New Zealand.
